Marla Ahlgrimm, R.Ph. | Checking Testosterone after Menopause

In Marla Ahlgrimm | on December 06, 2011 | by Marla Ahlgrimm

Marla Ahlgrimm, co-founder of Madison Pharmacy Associates, reports that some women assume a drop in sex drive is a natural part of getting older. Not true, according to Marla Ahlgrimm. She says that sex drive, outlook, and energy levels may drop because of a testosterone deficiency.

While women normally associate testosterone with a hormone produced in the male body, says Marla Ahlgrimm, females produce testosterone as well, through the ovaries during the reproductive years. Unlike estradiol and progesterone, a woman continues to produce testosterone after menopause, says pharmacist Marla Ahlgrimm, an expert in women’s health.

Marla Ahlgrimm explains to her patients that testosterone not only activates the sexual circuits in men’s brains, but also in a woman’s. It helps keep energy levels high, maintain muscle tone, and helps create an overall sense of well-being. In addition, testosterone contributes to the formation of new bone, according to Marla Ahlgrimm, founder of Women’s Health America. Estrogen decreases bone breakdown. The two hormones work together to enhance bone health.

Prescription Therapy

If a woman is determined to have low testosterone, Marla Ahlgrimm, co-founder of Madison Pharmacy Associates, explains that her physician will probably prescribe a testosterone prescription using a vaginal cream, which she’ll only need to apply 2 to 3 of times per week for its affect on local tissues or a transdermal skin cream which she may apply daily for its systemic effect within the body. By starting with a low dose, doctors can monitor beneficial effects as well as side effects, which may include anxiety, irritability, sudden growth of dark facial hair, oily skin, or acne, explains Marla Ahlgrimm, a licensed pharmacist.

Natural testosterone is prescribed in oral capsules, transdermal or vaginal creams, or under-the-tongue tablets and is identical to the hormone testosterone produced by a woman, according to Marla Ahlgrimm, author of The HRT Solution.

Pharmacist Marla Ahlgrimm is quick to point out that natural testosterone is manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and is available commercially for men but not in the low doses that women need. Pharmacies compound each individual testosterone prescription for women, Marla Ahlgrimm, pharmacist, explains, producing a specific dosage for each patient in the amount prescribed by her physician.

Founder of Women’s Health America, Marla Ahlgrimm has worked for more than three decades with women concerned about premenstrual syndrome, perimenopause, and menopause. Through the pharmacy she co-founded, Madison Pharmacy Associates, Marla Ahlgrimm, R.Ph. has helped more than 300,000 women.
